I wrote this song after cheating on my boyfriend at the time. I felt like shit. I wrote this mostly to remind myself of this truth and to help myself heal. It worked. I realized that even if I do something that hurt someone and that person never forgives me, I had to do my own work and forgive myself regardless. This is true freedom. This song was recorded and included as the title track of Your/Self 2008.
lyrics
This worlds has it’s way of shouting deep and clear
That you’re just not enough, you question why you’re here
You look into the mirror, deep into your eyes
You’re visions never clear, you can’t see past the lies
If you wanna free yourself, you got to love yourself
If you wanna free yourself, you got to forgive yourself
If you wanna free yourself, you got to love yourself
If you wanna free yourself, you got to give, give yourself
So many times in my life I’ve been drawn to the flame
It sits me down and tells me the reason for my name
“Patience” and “Grace” is who I’m meant to be
This sacred path I’m guided down is mapped out carefully
If I wanna free myself, I got to love myself
If I wanna free myself, I got to forgive myself
If I wanna free myself, I got to love myself
If I wanna free myself, I got to give, give myself
It’s so easy to love your mother
It’s so easy to forgive your brother
It’s so easy to love eachother
It’s not easy to forgive, forgive yourself
If you wanna free yourself, you got to love yourself
If you wanna free yourself, you got to forgive yourself
If you wanna free yourself, you got to love yourself
If you wanna free yourself, you got to give, give yourself
