Recognizable Sound (live)

about

I wrote this on piano which is not my instrument. But I was in that blue mood and it felt right. There was an old out of tune piano at the Busstop Theatre in Halifax’s north end where I was living. I went there to see Howard Beye, the owner at the time, and while he was busy I started playing this on piano. I wrote the lyrics shortly after about a relationship I was in that wasn’t feeling right. I used the words recognizable sound in reference to a song my mom Lynda Koile wrote called “The Sound of Leaving” which goes “she knows the sound of leaving just the way some people know it’s gonna rain”. The song was recorded for Your/Self 2008 where I played an old piano for the first half then Mike played a nice piano for the rest. If you play that track on the original album there’s a secret track at the end which was a Nightowls (Mike and Mark) song that I improvised on called “Don’t Deny Me”

lyrics

Feeling faded, avoiding my daily routine
Not yet jaded, some truth remains to be seen
I’ve managed to avoid the storm outside
I’ve managed to avoid taking your side
Cuz up till now everything felt right
It’s about that time, let this love take flight

My actions and his grace (don’t seem to line up)
Take a look at this faded face (don’t seem to line up)
Why everything hasn’t unwound (don’t seem to line up)
To that recognizable sound

Quietly intense I speak my mind through grey eyes
Tell-a-tale scents fill the room I don’t realize
I’ve managed to avoid the storm inside
I’ve managed to avoid taking your side
Cuz up till now everything felt right
It’s about that time let, let this love take flight

My actions and his grace (don’t seem to line up)
Take a look at this faded face (don’t seem to line up)
Why everything hasn’t unwound (don’t seem to line up)
To that recognizable sound
