about

Such a beautiful song by my good friend Joyce who provided this interlude for the show. Here’s Joyce: "I wrote this song after returning from a trip with someone I was considering marrying, when my biological clock pounded in my late twenties. A few months before we got involved, I was dealing with immense inner upheaval by spending time in a certain clearing in the woods. It was a comforting place where I could just be, and tune into my own creation and God's wooing presence in nature. I felt I was receiving gentle guidance and reorientation there. But my restlessness and desire for something to take shape in my life overtook this gift. The chorus expresses regret over trading my "wings" for the arms of a man. In the end, I return to the clearing, lay down my burdens and immerse myself in reality again.“

The Clearing
Joyce Saunders, c. 2006

You saw your shadow in the grass
Up in the clearing where the wind blows past
You danced around for nobody's eyes but yours
And on the ground, you laid your burdens down

Hung around with a cowboy, but only for awhile
You had a hard luck summer, he had an easy style
You paid the fare, on the fast track to nowhere
You didn't care, you left yourself behind

Chorus
Where did you go? Where did you go?
The one that we… came to know
Where are you hiding, child?
Who took you out of the wild?
You were so safe You were so safe
Under those… wings you made
And then you traded them
For the arms of a man

I understand why you spend time alone
Under the branches of those trees that you know
Sheltered from all the storms in your mind
I know the kind; I've felt that wind before

Chorus, then repeat:
Where did you go? Where did you go?
The one that we… came to know
Where are you hiding, son?
Always the lonely one
You were so safe You were so safe
Under those… wings of grace
And then you fell down…into my heartbeat sound

You see your shadow in the grass
Up in the clearing where the wind blows fast
You dance around….for nobody's eyes but yours
And on the ground, you lay your burdens down
