Zip Down Your Skin (live)

about

Definitely one of my most philosophical works taking on the brokenness of humanity. Although when I wrote this at 19 I was a lot more religious than I am now, the ideas I had still resonate with me and still feel relevant today. This song was recorded for Your/Self 2008.

lyrics

I wanna zip down your skin
To reveal your wounded heart
I’ll reach in with my hands
And put back the pieces that have fallen apart
Allow your healing power
To flow right on through my fingertips and
When it’s good and healed
I’ll hold it in and zip it up again

It’s undeniable, I am born into a flawed existence
There’s a part of you and me that’s always putting up resistance
Why does it take a conscience thought to show kindness to a stranger?
With all the safe things that I’ve bought I still feel like I’m in danger

I wanna zip down your skin
To reveal your wounded heart
I’ll reach in with my hands
And put back the pieces that have fallen apart
Allow your healing power
To flow right on through my fingertips and
When it’s good and healed
I’ll hold it in and zip it up again

The pendulum swings to the left or to the right
If it were standing still would it ever catch my sight?
When I look past the shallow waters and I swim down to the deep
I realize my true desire is to set your people free

(guitar solo: Mike Ritchie)

I wanna zip down your skin
To reveal your wounded heart
I’ll reach in with my hands
And put back the pieces that have fallen apart
Allow God’s healing power
To flow right on through my fingertips and
When it’s good and healed
I’ll hold it in and zip it up again
